Yes, we care about your stories I’ve been a little M.I.A. from campus and the blogs lately, and that’s because I’ve been on the road for several weeks! Every year, admissions officers at many colleges and universities will travel across the country to inform students about the opportunities and resources available at our institutions, while also answering questions you may have about the college application process. Throughout my travels, I noticed that I kept getting asked a similar version of the question, “Do you care about this life obstacle that has affected my educational journey?” However, it was asked in several ways: Do you care that my family was affected my gang and gun violence during my first year of high school? Can I write an essay about how we started a Black Student Union in our school to build community, but then had it disbanded because of problematic school administrators? Do you care that my teacher was shot last year, affecting my mental health in school? That last question came from a student at a high school that was a 15-minute drive from the house I grew up in (where I was staying to get some home-cooked food from my mom during travels). There were several moments during my travels, including that one, where after I left a high school visit, I got in my car and cried. I cried not only because these stories were sad and hard to hear, but I also cried because of how unfair and inequitable education is in the United States. I cried because I knew that these marginalized students were exceptional and overcoming seemingly insurmountable circumstances, yet would likely arrive at a selective university and experience imposter syndrome; these are often students who are told they are only admitted to colleges because of their race, gender, or socioeconomic status (which is completely untrue). I cried because I knew that I was only seeing a small sliver of underrepresented students â€" ones who had made it to their senior year of high schoo l (when many others do not). I cried because I reflected on the time I went to a small carnival in my hometown during high school and had to run from a shootout (to be transparent, I grew up in a mixed-income suburb, and this was my only experience with gun violence in high school), yet when I told this story at my privileged and predominantly-white undergraduate institution, many of my peers made me feel poor and impoverished. I wondered how the students I interacted with on the road would experience their own world-shifting when they transitioned to college. The educational system in the United States is clearly unequal. Many high schools are just as racially segregated today as they were during the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision that was supposed to overturn racial segregation in public schools. In our office, we are constantly thinking about how this segregation creates unequal access to advanced STEM courses, standardized test preparation, extracurricular opportunities that may cost money to participate in, and nearly every aspect of our application process. When I tell people I work in college admissions, I often get asked about how hard it is for me to read these essays about hardship over and over again. First, I try to remind folks that it is much more challenging to live in hardship/experience trauma than to read about it (this also may come from my days as a college counselor, which was byfar the most emotionally draining work I have ever done â€" kudos to counselors everywhere!). Then, I explain that it isn’t so much any individual story that affects me at this point. Rather, it’s the system. It’s the fact that I can read an application from a wealthy Black student who has seemingly “made it” and has a lot of financial and educational access, but then still experiences racism in their schools. It’s the system that allows me to read an essay about unaffordable housing or gentrification and I will have no idea what city applicants are talking about because these issues are occurring in nearly every city across the countr y. It’s the fact that across culture, race, or religion, I constantly read essays about LBGTQ+ students who are unable to be themselves in their home environments. It’s not one essay or story that often makes me cry (although they sometimes do), but moreover, the constant exposure to a system that affected my grandparents, my parents, myself, and likely any future children I have; it’s the system that makes me one of very few college graduates in my family and the first to pursue a graduate degree; it’s the system that was designed to keep people like me and my family out, yet forces us to constantly navigate. So, to answer the question I was asked so many times this year, yes, we care! We care because your context matters to us. When we evaluate your accomplishments and achievements, we try our best to imagine the world in which you are achieving those accomplishments. We care so much that many of us have tried to explain this on the blogs; I know that I’m certainly not the first person to write about this topic on our blogs, or the second, or the third (and there are MANY others). Yet, were still getting asked if we care, so I thought it was worth saying again. Lastly, most of us got jobs in admissions because we care about students â€" and that includes you! I know we’re in the midst of the application process right now â€" so seniors filling out apps this year, I don’t want you to think that you have to write about hardships to get into MIT (or that hardships are the only way to get in). However, I want to emphasize that if you have faced hardships or obstacles, it only helps you in our process to tell us about them. Some students choose to do this in their essays (and we ask about a hardship or challenge you’ve had to overcome, so that makes sense); but you do not have to write essays about hardships (particularly traumatic ones). You can always ask a recommender to talk about circumstances in their rec letters, or you can use your essay space to talk about other aspects of your life and include information in our “Additional Information” â€" it doesn’t have to be a story form, just tell us what’s been going on. You don’t get points for the way you tell us â€" we just want to know your context to better understand YOU. Lastly â€" I did want to mention one more note. When we think of marginalized students in our application process, we don’t just think about hardship and struggle. We also think about the value students bring to our campus. The ways in which, when students feel empowered to tell their stories, they can transform the worldview of students, staff, and faculty on our campus. We think about the resiliency students who have overcome trauma bring to MIT, and how they often are able to provide empathy to other students in our supportive community. We’re also aware of the impact that an admittance to MIT can have on a student’s life, their family’s life, and their entire community. When I think of underrepresented students at MIT, I think of one of our students who is an aspiring rapper and the time I went to his first concert, or the times I’ve spent with students analyzing their astrological signs, or the trivia questions we ask each other to increase our odds at getting on Jeopa rdy, or the fact that a student who used to work for our office graduated and now works at MIT in the Office of Engineering Outreach Programs trying to increase access to STEM education across the country. I think of inspiring folks who have overcome a lot, but aren’t walking rain clouds of sadness. Rather, I think of the joy they bring to this campus every day.

Most individuals are found to occupy several statuses simultaneously thus giving us the term ‘status set’(SDEA). For example, an individual can take on the status of mother, wife, employee and friend. Out of all the statuses we occupy, there is one significant status that tends to override all the other statuses one may occupy, this is termed as a ‘master status’ (SDEA). Status can be further divided into two types, ‘achieved status’ and ‘ascribed status’. To illustrate ‘achieved status’, Usain Bolt is best known for being the fastest man in the world. As life brings change, so too do our statuses. It is constantly evolving according to changes and stages in life. Despite our state of affairs, it is our status that guides our behaviour. For instance, a colleague may turn up to work one day after facing some difficulties at home, however in a work environment, he would continue to work and behave in a professional manner regardless of his personal situations. In addition, individuals can also reinforce their identity by using status symbols in as part of their appearance. Because people tend to have many different statuses and therefore, many different roles, conflict occasionally occurs among the various roles. The concept of role conflict is â€Å"conflict among the roles connected to two or more statuses† (ref). A good example of role conflict lies in the working mother; she must take on the responsibilities of mothering the children at home while taking on the responsibilities of working outside the home, away from the children, in order to earn an income (RR). This kind of conflict involves roles which arise from separate statuses, but the same sort of conflict can occur from the roles of a single status. Role strain, then, is â€Å"tension among the roles connected to a single status†. A teacher, for example, can be friendly with his or her students, but must remain objective in grading them. Roles help to keep our behaviour aligned to our particular status. Roles are an essential component of social structure because they lay out what is expected of people. Role performance is the way in which someone performs a role, showing a particular ‘style’ or ‘personality’ (SDEA). Role performance allows us our own unique individuality to show through. PARAGRAPH 4 â€Å"Knowledge is power, information is liberating, education is the premise of progress in every society in every family†. Social instituitions consist of family, religion, education, economics, medicine, politics, law, science, military and mass media (SDEA). Each one functions separately but together they enable society to maintain order and create a sense of community. The mass media influences our attitudes toward social issues, the ways that we view other people and even our self-concept (SDEA). Information in the media can be extremely persuasive, it can easily alter our perception if we are not careful or have very little experience in the topic of interest. They not only provide information and recreation but also mould public opinion and attitudes. The information and knowledge which we accumulate through life from media is part of creating an identity for ourselves. To demonstrate, smoking advertisements have been around to promote awareness and advises us of serious health implications. However, today’s youth may view it differently and partake in it because of peer pressure. On the other hand, media can also bring nations together when there is an important event such as the Olympics, press conferences and so on (RR). The topic of religion is another social institution as it involves patterns of beliefs and behavior that help a society meet its basic needs (steven Burkan). Emile Durkheim (1915/1947) [1] observed long ago that every society has beliefs about things that are supernatural and awe-inspiring and beliefs about things that are more practical and down-to-earth (Durkheim, E. Koran And Women The Koran's Attitude Towards Women The Koran is a book following the religion of the Muslim people. In it, many aspects of their ways of life and their attitudes towards different people are addressed. It mentions the strong feelings of the true believers towards Jews and Christians, however it gives a view of women that is taken two ways. A major part of their religion is the way women should be treated. This idea is a controversial topic as seen from a person that is not a true believer, or a Muslim. Conventional thinking brought out by the media have led non-Muslim people to perceive the treatment of women as suppressive. The Koran shows the reader both sides of the coin, and therefore, the reader must form an opinion of the way they thing women are treated. After reading The Koran, one would think that it belittles women, such as the way they are treated, and the role they play in society. However, with respect to their society habits, rituals, ways of life, and their religion, Muslim women are actually treated wi th more respect, and with more decency. The people of the book have very strict ideas about how society is to be run based upon their religion and culture. They are given certain rules and are expected to follow them. They have a proper understanding of how they are to live their life and how they are to treat other people. In the case of women, The Koran is very specific when it comes down to how they are to be treated and their role in life. ?Women shall with justice have rights similar to those exercised against them, although men have a status above women.? As a protection to women, men are forced to go outside of the house into the world that is cold and evil. They are told that they must do this everyday and bring home money to provide for their family and wife. The woman is to stay home in a safe place and take care of what she knows best. This is not mean to make women feel inferior but to make them feel safe and free from the world. There are many reasons why people believe that women are treated without respect in the Islamic nations. First and foremost, it says in The Koran that women may be beaten: Men have authority over women because God has made the one superior to the other, and because they spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient. They guard their unseen parts because God has guarded them. As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them, forsake them in beds apart, and beat them. Then if they obey you, take no further action against them. (64) Many people see this as wrong, but why? It is clearly stated in the Islamic religion that women may be beaten if they are disobedience. Why then, would a woman do something defiant if she knows that she will be hurt? It is an expression of optimism. A vision is a general statement encompassing the direction an agency wants to take and the desired end result once it gets there. It is the vision of what those involved what their organization to become.† (Associatedcontent.com, 2007) In addition, a vision for an organization needs to be communicated in order to be effective and received the buy-in necessary to carry out its objective. This is also very true when there is a large and profound change the need to occur with the organization such as the one Victoria Hospital Redesign Initiative undertook. This paper will discuss the Victoria’s vision, mission, and strategy for achieving their vision and what they did well and what techniques they could have used to improve the goal. The Vision Victoria’s vision â€Å"was to provide a positive environment with effective results for patients, who would move through the various phases of care†¦in a seamless efficient fashion.† (Leban and Stone, 2008). This vision was integral to the sustainability of the hospital to exist in a highly competitive market. This vision was also required to offset the external environmental factor such as lack of funding by the government and raising cost in health care. In creating a more positive and efficient environment the current internal structure and other resources such as technology will need to be reexamine and redefined to fit into the Victoria’s new vision and mission. Dr. Frelick vision was clear and direct, that is, it wanted to re-engineer the hospital‘s processes, maximize its technology, and create other streams of revenue though entrepreneurial spirit. His vision received initial support, but later succumbed to scrutiny by the board of direct ors and some of his senior staff. To get full acceptance of his vision, Dr. Frelick, will have to persuade and stress the important of the vision to the survival of the organization. Victoria Hospital’s Mission The hospital mission’s statement â€Å"was to provide excellent, compassionate healthcare care for its community; to provide comprehensive health education; and to seek answers though health sciences research.† However, when Dr. Frelick became CEO, he modified the mission to â€Å"develop care plans across the continuum of care; develop new work processes to streamline operations and reduce costs; and focus on delivering quality care directed at meeting patients’ services need.† (Leban and Stone, 2008). This new mission statement helps to support his newly created vision he wanted to implement in order to push Victoria hospital into a better competitive position and profitability while provide excellent service to their patients. Strategy for Vision Success A strategic three point plan had been laid out by Dr. Frelick to achieve his vision for the hospital. His first strategy involved, â€Å"brining the organization structure into line with the way the hospital cared for patients.† (Leban and Stone, 2008). The second strategy required a change in the way they used their technology to meet expected patient outcomes, and deal with resources. The third strategy included entrepreneurial abilities to aid the vision. All three of these strategies requires a plan, therefore, Dr. Frelick assembled a team headed by senior management to develop the plan, thereby involving staff member in the plan. In crafting the vision, the teams brainstormed, developed a prototype interdisciplinary care teams, and developed specific guidelines by which the care teams would follow. Since communication is a key ingredient to get buy-in from everyone involved in the change, he also involved is senior staff in his vision from the beginning and †Å"presented the goals, the strategy for implementation, and the financial targets to the board of directors for information and support.† (Leban and Stone, 2008). He held multiple planning sessions but only receive a modest amount of buy-in from his senior staff. He wasn’t persuasive enough to carry his vision to everyone. He attempted to directly ask for their support and leadership. However, this proved to be a weak approach because the levels of enthusiasm were not consistence. Dr. Frelick gave up too easy in stating the importance of this vision and didn’t align his vision with the hospital’s culture. Lessons Learned In developing and delivering a vision, a change leader must involve the organization’s staff in every facet. They should exercise persuasion to get buy-in for the vision by constantly communicating the vision and its plan over and over again. It is not enough to communicate and provide clarity for the change, but it must be aligned with the organization’s culture and provide a framework for the vision to receive feedback. ? The History of Coca-Cola and John Pemberton

The History of Coca-Cola and John Pemberton In May 1886, Coca-Cola was invented by Doctor John Pemberton, a pharmacist from Atlanta, Georgia. According to the Coca-Cola Company, Pemberton developed the syrup for the famed beverage, which was sampled at the local Jacobs Pharmacy and deemed to be excellent. The syrup was combined with carbonated water to create a new Delicious and Refreshing drink. Pemberton concocted the famed Coca-Cola formula in a three-legged brass kettle in his backyard.   Birth of Coca-Cola The name of Coca-Cola was a suggestion given by Pembertons bookkeeper Frank Robinson. As the recipe for the syrup called for coca leaf extract and caffeine from the kola nut, the name Coca Kola was easy to come up with. However, Robinson, who was known for having excellent penmanship, thought that using two Cs in the name would look striking in advertising. As such kola became cola, and the brand name was born. Robinson can also be credited with creating the first scripted Coca-Cola using the flowing letters that serve as the famous logo of today. The soft drink was first sold to the public at the soda fountain in Jacobs Pharmacy in Atlanta on May 8, 1886. About nine servings of the soft drink were sold each day. Sales for that first year added up to a total of about $50. The first year of business wasnt much of a success, though, as it cost Pemberton over $70 in expenses to create the drink, resulting in a loss. Asa Candler In 1887, another Atlanta pharmacist and businessman, Asa Candler, bought the formula for Coca-Cola from  Pemberton for $2,300. Unfortunately, Pemberton died just a few years later. By the late 1890s, Coca-Cola was one of Americas most popular fountain drinks, largely due to Candlers aggressive marketing of the product. With Candler now at the helm, the Coca-Cola Company increased syrup sales by over 4,000 percent between 1890 and 1900. While the Coca-Cola Company denies this claim, historical evidence shows that it is likely that, until 1905, the soft drink, which was marketed as a tonic, contained extracts of cocaine as well as the caffeine-rich kola nut. While cocaine wasnt considered illegal until 1914, according to Live Science,  Candler began removing cocaine from the recipe in the early 1900s, and traces of cocaine may have been present in the famous beverage until 1929 when scientists were able to  perfect the removal of  all psychoactive elements from the coca-leaf extract. Advertising was an important factor in the successful sales of Coca-Cola, and by the turn of the century, the drink was sold across the United States and Canada. Around the same time, the company began selling syrup to independent bottling companies licensed to sell the drink. Even today, the U.S. soft drink industry is organized on this principle. Death of the Soda Fountain; Rise of the Bottling Industry Until the 1960s, both small-town and big-city dwellers enjoyed carbonated beverages at the local soda fountain or ice cream saloon. Often housed in the drugstore, the soda fountain counter served as a meeting place for people of all ages. Often combined with lunch counters, the soda fountain declined in popularity as commercial ice cream, bottled soft drinks, and fast-food restaurants became popular. The Birth and Death of New Coke On April 23, 1985, the trade secret New Coke formula was launched in response to declining sales thanks to an increasingly competitive cola market.  However, the new recipe was considered a failure. Coca-Cola fans had a negative, some say hostile, reaction to the new recipe, and within three months, the original cola that captured the hearts and tastebuds of the public returned. The return of the original cola taste came with new branding of Coca-Cola Classic. New Coke remained on the shelves, and in 1992 was rebranded Coke II, before finally being discontinued in 2002. As of 2017, Coca-Cola is a publicly-traded Fortune 500 company with more than $41.3 billion in annual revenue. The company has a workforce of 146,200 employees, and  its products are consumed at a rate of more than one billion drinks per day. Advertising Efforts: Id Like to Buy the World a Coke In 1969, The Coca-Cola Company and its advertising agency, McCann-Erickson, ended their popular Things Go Better With Coke campaign, replacing it with a campaign that centered on the slogan Its the Real Thing. Beginning with a hit song, the new campaign featured what proved to be one of the most popular ads ever created. The song Id Like to Buy the World a Coke was the brainchild of Bill Backer, the creative director on the Coca-Cola As he explained to songwriters Billy Davis and Roger Cook, I could see and hear a song that treated the whole world as if it were a person - a person the singer would like to help and get to know. Im not sure how the lyric should start, but I know the last line. With that he pulled out the paper napkin on which he had scribbled the line, Id like to buy the world a Coke and keep it company. On February 12, 1971, Id Like to Buy the World a Coke was shipped to radio stations throughout the United States. It promptly flopped. The Coca-Cola bottlers hated the ad and most refused to buy airtime for it. The few times the ad was played, the public paid no attention. Backer persuaded McCann to convince Coca-Cola executives that the ad was still viable but needed a visual dimension. The company eventually approved more than $250,000 for filming, at the time one of the largest budgets ever devoted to a television commercial. A Commercial Success The television ad Id Like to Buy the World a Coke was released in the United States in July 1971 and the response was immediate and dramatic. By November of that year, Coca-Cola and its bottlers had received more than 100,000 letters about the ad. Demand for the song was so great, many people called radio stations and asked deejays to play the commercial. Id Like to Buy the World a Coke made a lasting connection with the viewing public. Advertising surveys consistently identify it as one of the best commercials of all time, and the sheet music continues to sell more than 30  years after the song was written. A tribute to the success of the campaign, the commercial resurfaced over 40 years after it first launched, making an appearance in the finale of the hit TV show Mad Men in 2015.

Tipi Tales Analysis

Tipi Tales Analysis Mahealani Subad As children grow, we try to teach them certain values that will help them later in life to become good human beings. Some of the teachings can be taught from children shows as they show scenarios of life lessons, such as honesty, through characters that children attach themselves too. In the children show Tipi Tales (Oswald 2002), it presents children with life lessons and stories that based upon Indigenous culture through puppeteer work. With the children show ended in 2007, it taught lessons, specifically Ojibwe teachings, and converting some of the values from those teachings into characters to make the show relatable to younger audiences (Ojibwe Teachings The 7 Grandfathers). The show was seen as a way to present Indigenous culture to Canadian children in a way to connect the indigenous community with prime-time television as it was mainly shown on the popular television station Treehouse (Course Entertainment 2002). Within the show, Tipi Tales (Oswald 2002) follows four cousins of Indigenous descent who visit their great-grandparents where they are taught life lessons from various characters who resemble Ojibwe teachings. In the childrens show, there are seven animal characters, in which, each of the animal characters correspond with the Ojibwe teaching of the Seven Grandfather Teachings (Ojibwe Teachings The 7 Grandfathers). The Seven Grandfather Teachings are the ethical values of the Ojibwe people, which consists of humility, bravery, honesty, wisdom, truth, respect and love (Ojibwe Teachings The 7 Grandfathers).ÂÂ   These values that the Ojibwe had set was apart of their oral traditions that have been passed down by elders within the community (Verbos and Humphries 2013). The values were told through story that conveyed the meaning of how human beings should behave whether if it is towards each other or the Earth (Verbos and Humphries 2013). An example of the values and the relation i t has with human beings and the Earth would be respect as it attaches itself to all creations such as nature, creatures and people (Verbos and Humphries 2013). In indigenous culture, nature is not seen as an object, but as a living thing, in which, indigenous people believe that the Earth should not be treated or be exploited by human beings at the expense of other forms of life (Verbos and Humphries 2013). The way Tipi Tales portray these values sets them in an understanding that children can comprehend the meaning of each lesson taught within each episode of the show. However, when analyzing the show, I did not comprehend the Indigenous origins of the values that were being portrayed within the show. Although the show involved an indigenous family and had undertones of Indigenous music during the title sequence, I had to look further into learning about the 7 Grandfather teachings to truly understand the indigenous origins behind the show. Nonetheless, with the exclusion of the extensive research to understand the origin of values taught within Tipi Tales, it does create a cultural outreach to Canadian audiences as there are not many children shows that present an indigenous culture or identity on prime-time television. As mentioned before, Tipi Tales was one of the two shows, along side The Mole Sisters, to present the rich and oral traditions of Canadas Aboriginal community and our strong literary traditions on Canadian prime-time television (Course Entertainment 2002). By making the decision of adding a children show based upon Indigenous teachings, it can be seen as respectable allowing diversity into younger audiences entertainment as the show is shares the values of the Seven Grandfather Teachings of the Ojibwe people. The show can be a starting point into introducing Indigenous culture to children as there are aspects of the culture that everyone can learn from, especially as an adult as life can be construed fr om the mistreatment and exploitation that we see often that effects the Earth or our everyday lives. Upon researching the children show, Tipi Tales, I had only heard of the show and watched some of the episode as a child not putting any thought into the show as it seemed like any other children show that taught life lessons of how to be kind and to treat others the way they wanted to be treated. However, with taking another look at the show, it presents a deeper meaning as the show introduces life lessons in the perspective of Indigenous culture where the whole show is based upon the Seven Grandfather Teachings of love, honesty, bravery, wisdom, humility, truth, and respect. A View from the Bridge: Relation Ship Between Eddie & Catherine

Eddie and Catherine are two important characters form the play â€Å"A View From The Bridge† by Arthur Miller. The play takes place in Brooklyn around 1950’s. Catherine is an orphan who grew up with her aunt and her aunt’s husband. She sees them as her parents. Eddie who is her aunt’s husband is like a real father to Catherine. Eddie and Catherine’s relationship changes from father and daughter to woman and man throughout the play. This change affects everybody around them and causes problems which ends tragically. In the play there are several main stages that show us the changes in Eddie and Catherine’s relationship.These stages are usually small incidents but each of them develops a new point to the relationship. The first point is on page 6 where Eddie starts commenting on Catherine’s skirt then goes on to criticize her walk and her actions. In that conversation Catherine says, â€Å" â€Å"Eddie, I wish there was one guy you cou ldn’t tell me things about! † This dialogue shows that Eddie has been overprotective before and Catherine has realized it. She does not say it seriously but rather, a joke; however she is actually trying to express that he’s being too overprotective.The device of depicting Italian and Sicilian immigrants, enables Miller to make them more or less articulae in English. Only Alfiery is a properly articulate, educated speaker of American English: for this reason he can explain Eddie’s actions to us, but not Eddie, who does not really speak his language. Eddie, who does not really speak his language. Eddie uses a naturalistic Brooklyn slang. His speech is simple, but at the start of the play is more colourful, as he tells Catherine she is â€Å"walkin’ wavy† and as he calls her â€Å"Madonna†Catherine’s speech is more often in grammatically standard forms, but not always. Her meekness is shown in the frequency with which her speeches begin with â€Å"Yeah†, agreeing with, or qualifying, Eddie’s comments. Rodolpho speaks with unnatural exactness. The words are all English but the phrases are not always idiomatic. He recalls vivid details of his life in Sicily, and he is given to poetic comparisons as when, on page 46, he likens Catherine to â€Å"a little bird† that has not been allowed to fly.Marco has to think before he can speak in whole phrases or sentences: this means he says little, which reinforces two ideas: that Marcois thoughtful, and that he is a man of action, rather than words. e Eddie Carbone is the tragic protagonist of â€Å" The view from the bridge†. He is constantly self-interested, wanting to promote and protect his innocence. Eddie creates a fictional fantasy world where his absurd decisions make sense, where calling the Immigration Bureau in the middle of an Italian community that prides itself on protecting illegal immigrants has no repercussions.In Eddieâ€℠¢s world, he imagines protecting Catherine from marriage or an male relationship and wants her for himself. While Eddie wavers and switches between communal and state laws and cultures, his motivations do not change. Eddie constantly looks out for himself at the expense of others and is ruled by personal love and guilt. There are several moments in the text where the audience is given clues that Eddie’s love for Catherine may not be normal. For example, when Catherine lights Eddie’s cigar in the living room, it is an event that gives Eddie unusual pleasure.This possibly warm and affectionate act between niece and uncle has phallic suggestions. Depending on interpretation by the actors, this moment many have more or less sexual undertones. Eddie’s great attention to his attractive niece and impotence in his own marital relationship immediately makes this meaning clear. Although Eddie seems unable to understand his feelings for his niece until the end of the play, other characters are aware. Beatrice is the first to express this possibility in her conversation with Catherine.Alfieri also realizes Eddie’s feelings during his first conversation with Eddie. Eddie does not comprehend his feelings until Beatrice clearly articulates his desires in the conclusion of the play,† You want somethin’ else, Eddie, and you can never have her! † Eddie does not realize his feelings for Catherine because he has constructed an imagined world where he can suppress his urges. This suppression is what devastates Eddie. Because He has no outlet for his feelings, even in his own conscious mind, Eddie transfers his energy to hatred of Marco and Rodolpho nd causes him to act completely irrationally. Eddie’s final need to secure or retrieve his good name from Marco is a result of Eddie’s failure to protect Catherine from Marco. Eddie believes he will regain his pride in the community, another wholly self-interested act. Eddie e scaped restraint because he escaped all thoughts of other people or the community at large. Eddie’s â€Å"wholeness† is a whole interest in himself. Eddie’s tragic flaw is the bubble, the constructed world he exists within, but is unable to escape or recognize.

In Europe from the late fifteenth to early seventeenth centuries many people, both men and women, were persecuted as witches. The reasons for the persecution of individuals as witches included gender discrimination, religious fanaticism, an explanation for the otherwise unexplainable events that took place, and even as a way for secular officials to gain more wealth. Misogyny being a cause to the witch trials may have resulted from the new roles of women in society conflicting with the traditional views of women as sinful, and also accounts for why the majority of individuals persecuted were women. A religious spark was ignited during the Protestant Reformation as people became more religiously devoted and wanted to eliminate threats to their faith, such as witches. Many strange occurrences such as disease or even non-harmful events that were simply unexplainable led people to believe witches as the causes. Some people may have not even believed another person to be a witch but may h ave just wanted wealth and that person’s possessions and declared them a witch for that reason. All these factors contributed to the period now known as the witch craze, which resulted in the torture and death of many people. The Vietnam War came at a time of great social and political unrest in America. It was right in the middle of the Cold War, a fierce worldwide battle between Eastern communism and Western democracy. There was already division going on in America at the time, with events like the red scare in Washington creating a growing fear of worldwide communism. The U.S. involvement in Vietnam began with Harry Truman aiding the French in an imperial war from 1946-1954, which the French eventually lost to the Vietminh. The U.S. once again entered Vietnam in 1965, this time involved in a civil war between the democratic South and the communist North.
